We are positively dying to begin our fall musical, Beetlejuice Jr.!

Based on the blockbuster motion picture turned Broadway show, Beetlejuice JR. tells the story of a strange and unusual teenager named Lydia Deetz, still grieving the loss of her mother, and obsessed with death. Lucky for Lydia, she and her father move to a new house haunted by a recently deceased couple and Beetlejuice, a delightful demon with a real zest for life. When Lydia calls on Beetlejuice to scare away anyone with a pulse, this double-crossing specter shows his true stripes, unleashing a (Nether)world of pandemonium.

FAQS

WHO IS ELIGIBLE TO AUDITION? Students grades 6 - 12 are eligible to audition.

HOW DO I SIGN UP FOR AUDITIONS?  After completing registration, you will be redirected to pay a $25 registration fee. (This is non-refundable, but will be credited towards your tuition.) Post payment, check your email -- you will find a link to sign up for your 30 minute initial audition slot.

ARE AUDITIONS REQUIRED? WHAT IF I CAN’T MAKE AUDITIONS? An audition is required for placement. If you are concerned about a scheduling conflict, please reach out to info@emcfinearts.org.

WHAT SHOULD I PREPARE? For your initial singing audition on Tuesday, September 24, please prepare a cut of a song (32 bars or about 1 minute) in the style of Beetlejuice, OR a song that best showcases your skillset. Please bring sheet music (and your book if you have one!) for the accompanist. You may sing from the show if you’d like.

WHY ARE WE DOING THE JUNIOR VERSION? Currently, licensing for the Beetlejuice musical is only available via the junior version. The major difference between the original Broadway version and the Junior version is the length: the show runs about 60 minutes.

WHEN WILL I FIND OUT ABOUT CALLBACKS? An email regarding callbacks will be sent during the day on Friday, September 27.

WHAT HAPPENS AT CALLBACKS? Callbacks will allow the creative team to distribute roles among the cast.  There will be a singing and acting portion.

CAN I PREPARE FOR CALLBACKS? If you’d like, but it is not required! However, if you do have your heart set on a role, you’re welcome to prepare the materials – they will be linked here ASAP!

DO I NEED TO HAVE PAST THEATRE EXPERIENCE?  No! All levels of experience are welcome. Whether this is your first or twenty-first musical, we’re thrilled to have you!

ARE YOU MAKING CUTS? No, auditions are for placement only. All who register will be cast in the show!

WHEN ARE REHEARSALS? For the majority of our time together, rehearsals will take place Tuesday - Thursday evenings from 6-9 PM, and Saturdays between 10-3PM. As we get closer to the show, those days and times will change slightly. Click here to view the rehearsal schedule.

THAT’S A LOT OF REHEARSAL – DO I HAVE TO BE THERE FOR ALL OF IT? Most likely, no. There will be a weekly breakout schedule emailed that specifies who is called at what times. The dates and times listed are the times that rehearsals will fall within; rehearsals will not fall outside those specified time frames.

WHEN ARE THE PERFORMANCES? There will be four performances: Friday, 12/6 at 8PM, Saturday 12/7 at 3 and 8PM, and Sunday 12/8 at 3PM.

WHAT IF I HAVE A CONFLICT? Conflicts will be dealt with in a case by case basis, but generally speaking, there are two unexcused absences permitted throughout the rehearsal period. Barring extenuating circumstances, there are no absences permitted past November 18.

WHAT IS THE COST OF TUITION? To participate in Beetlejuice Jr, there is a $450 fee per student cast member. This includes instruction with industry professionals, as well as performance costs of costumes, props, set, sound, lights, and special effects. Tuition may be covered partially or in full by selling playbill advertisements. Please email us for more information if you're interested in that route.

WHERE DO I PURCHASE TICKETS FOR PERFORMANCES?  Tickets are reserved and will become available on our website in early November.

For all other questions and concerns please email info@emcfinearts.org.

Character Breakdown

Lydia Deetz

Whip-smart, grieving fifteen- year-old whose dark sense of humor helps her cope with the loss of her mother, Emily. Lydia is unfazed by Beetlejuice’s antics and easily holds her own against both him and all things Netherworld.

Vocal range top: E5

Vocal range bottom: A3

Charles Deetz

Lydia’s father. He wants to help her get over the loss of her mother, although the ways he tries to “help” aren’t really what Lydia needs. Charles is under a lot of pressure between his concerns over Lydia, his secret relationship with Delia, his professional life, and his own grief (which he tries to ignore).

Vocal range top: F5

Vocal range bottom: Bb3

Beetlejuice

The dead guy of the hour! This titular character is zany, spooky, and absolutely hilarious. Though Beetlejuice exists in a morally gray area, he’s more of a trickster than a malevolent threat. He’s happy to align his interests with others, but ultimately, he’s looking out for himself.

Vocal range top: E5

Vocal range bottom: G3

Adam Maitland

Devoted husband of Barbara, just can’t catch a break. While life’s stresses were getting to him – renovation of the house, financial difficulties, and the decision about having a child – he certainly wasn’t ready for death.

Vocal range top: Eb5

Vocal range bottom: Bb3

Barbara Maitland

Barbara's stresses align with her husband’s, in life and death, although Barbara is a bit more adventurous than Adam. She is very kind but also strong-willed and a quick thinker. Barbara immediately bonds with Lydia.

Vocal range top: D5

Vocal range bottom: A3

Delia Schlimmer

Hopelessly (sometimes maniacally) optimistic. She believes fully in her guru, Otho, and considers herself a life coach, though underneath her façade she’s quite fragile and desperately wants to fit in with the Deetzes. Delia loves Charles and genuinely cares about Lydia’s well-being, even if her attempts to connect are somewhat misguided.

Vocal range bottom: G2

Maxie Dean

The business tycoon whom Charles hopes to impress.

Delia's guru and occasional exorsist.
